Adios Austin.

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

In a couple of days, my wife and I would be leaving Austin back to Hyderabad, India after sixteen weeks of vacation.
We came here for a purpose and its ending has been satisfactory to us. A new entrant to our family-birth of a grandson to us- brought immense happiness, and it was joyful seeing him grow slowly. It is bound to be more joyful during the next few months as he and his mother too are traveling with us to be in Hyderabad amidst more relatives.
Our stay has been comfortable and enjoyable, that was made more memorable by the hospitality of our daughter and son-in-law. We spent our time usefully without getting bored, despite staying indoors a greater portion of the time due to the vagaries of the weather and due to comforts in the house. Some of our relatives and friends visited us, and that gave us more happiness.
My only complaint is I did not get to see my neighbours as my visits outside the apartment were infrequent. As we are used to seeing crowds in India, the absence of a similar picture projects aloofness and a curfew like situation. But that is the way life goes and is lead here.
Driving around Austin and its suburbs, watching its news channels we have become familiar with the names of the counties in this part of Central Texas. We felt at home, though far away from our original home. I do wish that ABIA (Austin Bergstrom International Airport) and the new upcoming airport at Shamshabad in Hyderabad are connected by a direct flight with one stop over!
We had to alter some plans and pre-pone our return trip due to family obligations. And while we were here, there were moments of upsets that disturbed the tranquility of a peaceful period. We do believe that the almighty has a way for us and we have his blessings.
At the outset, we are leaving with mixed feelings. A thought does occur to me that I may find it difficult to travel long distance in future due to my body NOT supporting my mind. My wife, a great companion, ever helpful, feels that it is my discretion and destiny. I am suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a form of neurological disorder in my nervous system, which has no cure as of now. But research is vigorously on, and I am aware of it through excellent brochures sent to me by my nephew from Johns Hopkins, Baltimore.
We never know what future has in store for us. We are ever hopeful.
Till next time, adios Austin.

Passive bystander.

Monday, March 12, 2007

I have been reading a few American newspapers online, and with profound interest, watching on TV, the political and current issues of national significance being debated, discussed and dissected. I was trying to understand how issues are raised, reported and laid before an intelligent public for their reactions and views. This in depth analyses of issues would not have been possible without the contribution of electronic media, which gives a feeling of participation. For an onlooker like me on a foreign soil, this is a great education. Obviously, thoughts germinate for comparison with a similar scenario that exists in India. I do not like to overtly compare and get into a critical mood. However, there is much to learn. I will leave it at that.
Iraqi War
This issue is uppermost and talked about at every opportunity. Whatever comments are passed by anyone, any party sound justified. Starting from why America got involved in the first place TO how it should come out of Iraq with its pride intact. All the reasons aired, to remove Weapons of mass destruction; to go after Al Qaeda following 9/11; to bring about semblance of democratic form of governance in the middle-east regions; to have a greater control on oil supplies etc. may be true or may not be true. But one thing for sure, that this single act of war reacted in haste, without imposing tighter sanctions and following diplomatic talks appear-- a great blunder. It certainly shows that those available channels of persuasion were not adequately tried and tested.
Anger, the most harmful of human emotions, can only lead to destruction. It is THE weapon of mass destruction. Oh! Why all of us are submitting to this emotion very frequently these days? Simple, we all think that others must listen to us, shutting their well meaning advice.
Giving a decade for recuperation after the World War II, the world is a witness to several skirmishes initiated by the acts of politicians, which raises doubts about their competence in governance. Their actions, a mixture of good and bad, have a profound effect on the lifestyle of people. It is time, we think about earning peace, which can still be obtained alongside other pursuits.
American Politics/Road to the White House.
Under this title, C-Span is covering the current political scenario, the process of elections, the canvassing by candidates, issues and all relevant events connected to it. In my opinion, the coverage is fair, objective and very interesting. Though the elections are still away, the race to the seat of President is slowly and steadily heating up. It is anybody’s guess what could happen till then. Just imagine a situation, where American troops are brought back from Iraq, a truce signed amongst the sectarians and peace reigns in that region. That would lift the spirit of republicans which would make the race exciting. After all classic decisions are taken and momentous events do happen. www.c-span.org is a site that gives a comprehensive view of its coverage of topics.
PBS
Public broadcasting system describes itself as “a non–profit media enterprise owned and operated by the nation's 354 public television stations. A trusted community resource, PBS uses the power of noncommercial television, the Internet and other media to enrich the lives of all Americans through quality programs and education services that inform inspire and delight.” It lives by its words. Their programs on Science & nature, History, and various other programs are outstanding and enlightening. Its website www.pbs.org indicates that.
Other TV Channels
Equally interesting, so long they are viewed intermittently without getting addicted to them. News coverage on TV channels either in India or in America is repetitive. You have to reason out as to how news could be generated every minute. If they are interspersed with small documentaries on historical events, that would enhance their viewer ratings.
Some of the programs I have been watching regularly are The Woodwright’s shop- a program on traditional woodwork; Americas Funny Home Videos; American idol; Identity; Price is Right; HSN; QVC where the products, pretty innovative, are advertised and made aware of, aiming relentlessly at your temptations.
The weekly messages of Pastor Joel Osteen delivered by him across his television ministry are inspirational and full of hope. His hopeful messages are simple with perfect diction. I am thankful to my second daughter for asking me to listen to his messages. Aired on Sunday morning in Austin, hearing them are a great relief after six days of stress, and a great beginning for the next six days. His website www.joelosteen.com lists all his services.
Reading Newspapers online
The Internet made this possible. The website www.aldaily.com provides a link to various newspapers, which I read by choice. The articles in NY times and The Washington Post are superior in content and simple to comprehend. One such investigative report on the medical care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center was of the top order, causing dismissals of officials. A comprehensive review of the medical care at this center has been ordered by the Bush administration. The news on this issue, aired by other channels is engrossing.
Time Well Spent.
I am in Austin since three months, and with weather often forcing us to be indoors, there has not been a dull moment while indulging in these pastimes. Yet, I often felt I could have posted more blogs alongside. But, then you relish some things some times.
